"Flotspotting: Eye kandi from K&i Design Studio" is a lovely write up about us by core77, sister company to Coroflot. It's brilliant seeing these write ups - especially when we don't even know about them, it's like finding 10 bucks in your back pocket that you never knew was there.
Read below to see what they have to say or visit their site to view with some pics.
"Seeing as our sister site Coroflot hosts portfolios from the world over, It's always interesting to see where members hail from. Karl Mynhardt is a perfect example: he's one half of Cape Town, South Africa's K&i Design Studio, which he and his wife Ida (hence "K" and "I") launched last year. They've since won a Design Indaba Emerging Creative award alongside a growing list of local clients, as well as campaigns for international brands.
The photography highlights the tactile qualities of Mynhardt's work, as in the art direction for Wawa Wooden Surfboards and the Open publication, which won a Sappi Think Ahead Award.
It also doesn't hurt that many of their clients and independent projects are related to food.
In keeping with the construction-paper-cutout aesthetic of their art direction for the "Out in Africa" Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, this teaser video is charming but perhaps a bit frivolous."
'Frivolous' ? Gotta love their honesty - we do! Thanks for the wonderful words core77.
Old New Steeds - Our Upcycles
Friday was a happy day. Emile, friend and owner of Starling & Hero popped by after work to drop off our 'upcycles' and sip a pumpkin ale together. We're over the moon, wind in the hair and all that…
Ida really wanted a basket, then we remembered she already has one. We /missioned/ through some of our last bits of storage and there it was. We found the fittings still attached to another bike of hers. We whipped them off and got to work on her new vintage cruiser fitting the basket late that evening. Big smiles!
Mine was given that finishing touch by adding a beautiful leather Brookes saddle - originally a gift I gave to my old man but it somehow didn't ever gel on his Trek MTB! Thanks for being understanding dad.
Summer just got a whole lot better - cheers Emile.

Design Indaba - Perfectly Imperfect
Almost like a dream come true… I recall it being 2002 when Design Indaba ran a workshop at then the 'Art and Design Faculty of PE Technikon' by Lucille Tenazas (google the name if you don't know it - but you should! she's amazing). From the first day of the workshop it got me dreaming, my dream was to be associated with Design Indaba in any way whatsoever - I didn't even care if I only made it to 'tea boy'. Well I did a little bit better - way better in fact with the help from my precious and talented business partner and wife Ida.
"Forty young designers, five days of pure inspiration, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
We earned our National Design Colours as 2012 Design Indaba Emerging Creatives. And had a fantastic article/interview written about us, it's left us all warm and fuzzy like inside. Read our story here and be sure to enter for 2013 to claim your title too.
Box Set - yep, a box set
