SAIS 2013 - Part 3

The Speakers. The 'serious stuff', with an aim to inform still requires that little bit of spice needed to engage and excite the reader. We continued the theme by chopping off the heads of several great minds and dropped them onto a bunch of street pigeons taking flight.

We do things a little differently at K&i and yes it takes a little longer but what you end up with is a stronger finished product. Instead of creating a single speaker template and rolling it out, we opted for 4 and still managed to create room for movement beyond these templates.

DIY Fold out sofa bed

So, your parents are coming for Christmas and you don't have a guest bed...and you also don't want one as it takes up too much space. What do you do? Well, first thought might be that they can sleep on the couch? (ooh that's a bit harsh!) And it might not be such a fair deal if you have a DIY pallet couch for them to rest their weary bones on...

So we thought why not make a fold out sofa bed?! We bought some foam, stitched some fabric together, eventually managed to get the foam inside the fabric (not as easy as it might sound, so don't give up!), made some cushions and there you are, our very own super simple DIY fold out sofa bed! (as so kindly modeled by Guinness below)

This is what we used:

Foam size: 137 x 15cm (x 3 pieces)

Fabric pieces: 160 x 138,5cm (x 3 pieces) and 66,5 x 16,5cm (x 6 pieces for the side walls)

Here's how we did it:

Wrapping paper - Free download

Here's our annual 'DIY Christmas wrapping paper'. Download the file here to print out at home. Check out last years free wrapping paper here. For personal use only.

New handmade type

You won't find this typeface on any font site, as we proudly handmade this little treat ourselves. To create it we used the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" as it contains all the letters in the alphabet.

This Way Up

"This way up is brought to you by photographer Henry Thomas in collaboration with K&i Design Studio.

The concept of the installation is based on contradictions and juxtapositions. Taking the location of the space into consideration, This way up enables you to  descend into a world above.

The style of photography, graphic elements, merged images and contrasting expressions work together to create a different view of our environment.

A place where opposites meet... where city meets country, where images meet words.

A new space, where up is down and down is up."

This way up will be showcased  at the Megaro bar in London until March 2014. All artworks are available for sale.

SAIS 2013 - Part 2

The above spreads come prior to the 'serious stuff', the speakers pages. That's not to say that the Foreword and Welcome aren't serious but we did add a touch of fun design to them.

The message 'innovation goes viral, catch it for growth' was visually delivered in the form of a paper origami bird. The thinking was simple, we wanted to create an iconic element to drive the campaign which reflected the overall theme in an engaging and playful way.

Folded paper, angles, shapes and of course feathers where used to pull the book together in a fun and cohesive manner.
